Key Stage 4

The Key Stage 4 curriculum includes all the National Curriculum subjects prescribed for students aged 14 to 16, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Information Technology
  • Physical Education
  • Skills for Life (incorporating Personal, Social and Health Education)

Students also choose from a range academic and vocational qualifications that meet their personal interest areas and skill set to support them on their journey to employability:

  • Art
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama - Music and Performing Arts
  • Food Technology
  • Home Cookery Skills
  • Horticulture
  • Music
  • Cadets
  • Construction
  • Creative Media
  • ICT

During Key Stage 4 students also undertake modules linked to careers and transition to their next steps of learning as part of their skills for life lessons. 


Formative assessments are carried forward from Key Stage 3 and continue throughout Key Stage 4 to support the individual progress of pupils in the core areas of English and mathematics.

All courses in Key Stage 4 are award bearing and students are able to gain the following qualifications, as appropriate to their needs:

Entry Level

  • This is for students operating at Levels 1 -3 of the National Curriculum

General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)

  • This is offered at Grades 1-9 in some subjects

Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) qualification

  • This is offered at Level 2 and is equivalent to 2 GCSE qualifications at grades A* - C


All BTEC courses offered at Key Stage 4 have a coursework requirement:

  • Some are assessed continually throughout the Key Stage and externally moderated by the awarding bodies.
  • Some have regular formal testing as determined by the awarding body
  • Some have a final test or examination at the end of the period of study, usually in Year 11.
