Food Committee

Our school has an active food committee; the membership is open to all students and staff from the school community. The committee runs weekly with an assistant head co-coordinating meetings, venues and the distribution of notes and the domestic bursar and the school cook are active members of the committee.

The Function of the Food Committee

The function of the food committee is to enable the school community to reflect upon the quality of food being provided and also to respond to students’ ideas about which foods should be served at morning break as ‘tuck’ and for the main meal of the day.

Student Surveys

Surveys are carried out regularly, opinions are sought and all information about food is shared. The committee decides on theme days and menus to maintain and generate interest in food across the school. Class representatives are expected to share the committee notes with their class on a weekly basis and to bring forward new ideas, complaints and suggestions for any food related matters.

The Influence of the Food Committee

The committee has been influential in advocating healthy food choices and making sure that cultural differences are celebrated and enjoyed as theme days with a special menu. As part of the school curriculum, children have been taught that diet is central to health and the committee allows them to establish control over food choices.

In partnership, we have been successful in implementing significant changes to students’ diet within school.
